Team Howe Green - The Lanka Challenge

The Lanka Challenge is a holiday with a difference and this year’s event saw 30 tuk-tuks racing across Sri Lanka facing challenges along the way. Our very own Sales & Marketing Director Richard Centa and his wife Jackie formed Team Howe Green and over the 10-day trip, they covered some 920 miles in, what a travel writer for the Telegraph described as, ‘a hairdryer on wheels’.

One Hyde Park The wild and wonderful journey took participants right round the country from Katunayake and back to Columbo through bustling cities, over rugged hill country and around the stunning coastline. Teams were judged from one point to another on their timing and the performance of tasks. There were 7 legs in all, a speed limit of 70kph (which is no mean feat in a tuk-tuk with a 1500cc 2-stroke engine) and GPS was strictly forbidden.

The Lanka Challenge is organised by travel specialist Large Minority and forms part of their Meaningful Tourism initiative, aimed at encouraging visitors and helping charities and good causes across Sri Lanka. All challenges have an adventurous, ecological or cultural theme and often involve the local communities. This year’s challenge raised over 10,000USD.

“It really was an experience” said Richard. “Despite the bumps, crashes and forever running out of fuel!. A unique way of getting to see the country and meet its lovely people, plus it’s just really great fun. Not your usual holiday perhaps but well worth all the effort – even if we didn’t win!”.
