No Conkers please – we’re British!
The hopes of would-be conker champions were dashed as high winds brought about the cancellation of The World Conker Championships this month. This highlight of the autumn sporting calendar has seen thousands flock to Northamptonshire to watch as “modern day gladiators fight for glory armed only with a nut and 12" of string” as the organizers claim. The bad news for conkers continues as many British schools have now banished them from their grounds for fear of being sued by parents. Fair enough you may think, given the nature of the game, but when we also hear reports that children in UK schools are being made to wear goggles when using blu-tak, and that football in the playground and even running in some cases is forbidden too, one has ask if health and safety has reached ridiculous new heights?
In our industry, the challenge to design, create and construct safer buildings and environments in which to learn, work and play is serious business. The HSE estimates the cost to employers of slips, trips and falls alone to be around £512 million every year with the overall annual cost to society reaching a staggering £800 million when you take into account the cost to health service, social security and the loss of potential output.
Correct specification and proper installation can make the difference between a safe solution and an accident waiting to happen and here at Howe Green, we have been helping our customers design safety into buildings for over 25 years.
