Howe Green at Old Trafford
Last year, Howe Green was thrilled to be involved in the celebrations at Old Trafford marking 100 years of one of the most famous football stadiums in the world. Manchester United decided it should honour the occasion by leaving a long lasting tribute and a time capsule was buried at the stadium containing a variety of club memorabilia. It was sealed by the relatives of the original 1910 squad and buried close to the centre tunnel – the only remaining part of the original stadium. As part of the celebrations that day, a replica of the programme from the inaugural match - against Liverpool in February 1910 - was distributed to every fan passing through the turnstiles.
At a ceremony before a league match with Fulham, specially-invited guests witnessed the burying of the capsule. This included relatives of the 1910 Manchester United team and relatives of the then chairman J H Davies and stadium architect Archibald Leitch.
Contractor Projects Ltd undertook the works to create the hole for the time capsule, along with paving of the surrounding area and they chose a Howe Green access panel to provide a secure cover. A plastic chamber in the ground was created into which the time capsule was placed. It was then surrounded with a special sand to keep moisture at bay and our 7500 access panel was then fixed into place above the chamber and finished with a special rubberised resin flooring. To provide a visual reminder, the rubberised resin flooring was finished with Manchester United’s logo.
Even though the Manchester United fans among us here at Howe Green are few and far between, we were very proud to have been selected for a project with such posterity. We are already looking forward to being part of the celebrations in another 99 years time!
